Given how much Donald Trump hates the press, it didn't come as any surprise that he was the first US President in a very, very long time not to attend the annual White House Correspodents' Dinner, and will do the same again this year.

"Nerd Prom" is coming back to Washington at the end of the month, and that has prompted a lot of speculation about whether the president would attend this time or skip out like past year.

"The message underscoring it is one of participation this year, and I think that's a good thing", Talev said Friday, reports Politico.

"I sort of feel like the press is so bad, and so fake", he added.

Though notoriously thin-skinned, Mr Trump has subjected himself to ribbing before, including New York's Al Smith dinner during the 2016 campaign.

But the president, who has long had an adversarial relationship with the news media, did not elaborate on how he planned to do so.

Presidents traditionally attend the dinner, which offers a standing invitation to the occupant of the White House.

Trump skipped the event past year, holding a rally in Pennsylvania instead.

Trump had attended the dinner before becoming president, notably in 2011, when former US President Barack Obama publicly ribbed Trump about questioning whether Obama was born in the US.

The president, a well-known critic of mainstream media, has recently intensified his attacks on news outlets like The Washington Post.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders will be attending the event and sitting at the head table.

Both Obama and that year's host, Seth Meyers, tore into Trump with a series of scathing jokes from the dais.

Donald Trump, then the Republican presidential nominee, laughs with wife Melania during the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner in 2016.

A ston-faced Trump offered no reaction. Sanders faces the media in most of the daily briefings at the White House.
