Merkel is set to travel to the USA on Thursday evening and is widely expected to launch a last-ditch attempt there to convince President Trump to reverse his protectionist stance.
And Director of the center of Margaret Thatcher, the Heritage Foundation Nile Gardiner believes that the approach of the Merkel administration trump is more confrontational than that of Macron.
"The chancellor is pleased about this appointment because she is a convinced Atlanticist", a senior German official said.
"Will he insult, via his Twitter account, the female chancellor of Germany?"
German media cited government sources warning that an extension of the European Union's (EU) current exclusion from new USA tariffs on aluminum and steel imports was unlikely be achieved prior to the lapse of the current agreement on May 1.
"I think the chancellor would prefer a broad dialogue with the Americans".
"There is a special responsibility that all United States officials have to reject partisan politics when they take government service jobs", he said.
"We want to work with Berlin on global unfair trading practices because those are impacting our economies in equal measure", he said.More news: Students To Walk Out In Memory Of Columbine Shooting
"Trump humiliates Merkel before her Washington visit", Germany's financial daily Handelsblatt reports today.
"We will ask Germany to step up on burden-sharing", the official said, adding that North Atlantic Treaty Organisation needed to be strong and prepared to address a host of major foreign policy issues including Syria, Iran, China and Russian Federation.
Grenell's nomination was stalled for months - Trump nominated him in September - and the White House repeatedly cited it as an example of Democratic obstruction in the confirmation of the president's nominees.
She added that Grenell "has also been dismissive of the threat of Russia's meddling in the United States, a fact that is doubly concerning as Germany is one of our closest and most important allies in pushing back on Russian aggression on the world stage".
European Union countries are divided on the merits of Nord Stream 2. "Macron is closer to Trump on a personal level" Beyer said.
"The premise of Macron's proposal is that the agreement remains in its existing form and additional elements come on top", another German government official said. This gives Merkel something to work with.
Another key theme of the visit Merkel will be the transatlantic trade.
"Those are the fields in which her position is stronger because the Europeans are united and Macron has done the prep work".
