For decades, US policy refrained from recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital until Israelis and Palestinians settled the matter in a peace agreement.

"Our people will be eternally grateful for [President Trump's] decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and to move the American Embassy there tomorrow", Netanyahu declared.

The heritage center is located in the heart of Jerusalem's Nahalat Shiva neighborhood and works to educate visitors about the courageous non-Jews who assisted the Jewish people during the British Mandate in Palestine, the Holocaust, and the State of Israel's early days as a new nation.

The move prompted Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to halt ties with the Trump administration, declaring it unfit to remain in its role as the sole mediator in peace talks.

"I call on all countries to join the USA in moving their embassies to Jerusalem", Mr Netanyahu said, adding: "It's the right thing to do... because it advances peace".

Thousands of police officers were deployed throughout the Jerusalem districts to thwart any Palestinian protests and riots.

"Under any peace agreement you could possibly imagine, Jerusalem will remain Israel's capital". He promised to move the American Embassy to Israel and he is doing so.

The border rallies will culminate on May 15 (next Tuesday), which will mark the 70th anniversary of Israel's establishment - an event Palestinians refer to as the "Nakba" or "The Catastrophe".

Israel says it has a right to defend its border and has accused Hamas of using the protests as a cover for attacking it.

This year's celebration took on added significance due to the embassy move the following day.

Come Monday, Jerusalem will be the official home of the U.S. Embassy to Israel.

US President Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka, his senior adviser, and son-in-law Jared Kushner, as well as Secretary of Treasury Steven Mnuchin will lead the US delegation.

"It was really just us, it was our family that was there", she said. "The Palestinians feel that East Jerusalem should be the capital of a future Palestinian state".

At least 54 Palestinians have been killed in protests and clashes since March 30 along the Gaza Strip's border with Israel.

In Friday night's attack, a large crowd broke into the Palestinian side of the Kerem Shalom crossing between Gaza and Israel, badly damaging a fuel and gas terminal and a conveyor belt for aggregate and animal feed.

No Israelis have been wounded and the military has faced criticism over the use of live fire.

The Israeli army is gearing up for the final week of the "March of Return" protests and issued a stern warning on Sunday that Hamas will attempt to breach the security fence and carry out a "massacre" of Israeli citizens.
