After pitching four innings consisting of just 46 pitches, deGrom left his start against the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday night at Citi Field for undisclosed reasons. Swanson felt discomfort while hitting, and Braves manager Brian Snitker removed him as a precaution. He only lasted three innings and 43 total pitches, giving up three earned runs on two hits.

A first-round pick in the 2015 draft, Soroka has posted strong numbers at every stop on the way to the big leagues. He has started his career hot out of the gate with four doubles and a home run in just 19 at bats along with three singles. Sure, Vargas will probably bounce back after his horrendous first start, but that doesn't change the fact that he gave up nine runs in just 3.2 innings against a subpar Padres team.

Newcomb (2-1) also helped his cause in the seventh inning when he doubled with two outs and trotted home on Ender Inciarte's two-run homer that extended the lead to 3-0. The 24-year-old retired his final 14 batters, struck out eight and walked none on 97 pitches. The Tuesday night lineup marked the first time in nearly 40 years one team started the three youngest players in the game. Cespedes was stretching after the play when he noticed one of his necklaces was broken, pulled it off his neck and furiously threw it to the ground.

Oddsmakers have listed NY (-155) as the favorite over Atlanta (+145).

The Mets' telecast showed a frustrated deGrom returning to the clubhouse with his glove-hand on his head. Folty and Brandon McCarthy both hold ERAs below 3.25 and McCarthy leads the team with four of their wins. It was the second time the team has lost with Teheran starting this season (4-2). Frazier declined to name the umpire, saying only he met with one in San Diego on Sunday.

Right-handed starter Erasmo Ramirez and righty reliever Dan Altavilla have been put on the 10-day disabled list by the Mariners.
