The World Press Freedom Day was first proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993.
The three-day global event, which is on the theme; "Keeping Power in Check: Media, Justice and The Rule of Law", is being organised by the UNESCO in collaboration with the Government of Ghana. When supported, the free press has the potential to quicken the development of society. The Day will also examine contemporary challenges of ensuring press freedom online. Names are submitted by regional and worldwide non-governmental organisations working for press freedom, and by UNESCO member states.
She added, "Any State under the rule of law that respects individual freedoms, and particularly the freedoms of opinion, conscience and expression, relies on a free, independent press that is safe from censorship or coercion".
